Communication that gets the message across: conveying (diversity) issues in a way that suits the target audience

How can topics and programmes be designed and delivered in such a way that they are tailored to the actual needs of the people we wish to reach? This is the question addressed by the fifth event as part of the diversity audit at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg.

The university addresses a wide range of topics and develops numerous programmes for different groups of people. However, even a programme that is academically sound and well-intentioned does not automatically reach the people for whom it is intended. We often view target groups initially from our own academic or institutional perspective. To ensure our initiatives are tailored to people’s needs, it is therefore important to also take into account the perspectives of the people we wish to engage or support through our initiatives.

This is explicitly not about public relations in the traditional sense. The focus is neither on writing texts nor on using social media. Rather, we want to work together to develop a better understanding of different target groups and address questions such as the following:

  • Who do we want to reach with our topics and services?

  • What do we know about the perspectives and needs of these people?

  • What expectations, experiences and potential barriers to access should we take into account?

  • Which assumptions about our target groups should we question?

  • How can their perspectives be incorporated right from the start when designing our topics and services?

In this interactive session, we will explore different perspectives and work together to develop initial approaches for designing and delivering topics and programmes at OVGU in a way that is tailored to the needs and target groups.

All interested members of the OVGU community, including our students, are invited. This event can be attended independently of previous sessions of the Diversity Audit. No prior knowledge is required.
